Roland VP-330 Calibration

Quite some time has passed since the last blog post, again the reason for this is simple, we’ve just been really busy. Anyway i’ve added a few new posts of the recent jobs we’ve been working on. There’s a few more to add, but they are ongoing so as soon as they are completed i’ll make some new posts about them. Anyway a new addition to the studio arrived, a Roland VP-330 vocoder. It’s in really nice shape too, except for a tiny mark near the logo. As with most things that arrive, it needed tuning and calibration. This i promptly did and now it’s sitting in it’s new home quite happily.

DIY Sync 24 Splitter

After we did a little rearranging in the studio it became aparent that we didn’t have enough sync 24 connections for all the old Roland gear. So i was tasked to build a sync 24 splitter. A relatively simple task since its a completely passive circuit, so i set to work and you can see the results of my labour in the picutres.

Oberheim 8-Voice Repairs

Another Oberheim 8-Voice, well actually this is the one from the studio, back in to figure out whats causing it’s problems.  Upon inspection, a card from the programmer is missing. It’s location at this moment is unknown, it was removed before i started working here. Hopefully we can find it and get this machine back to full operational status.

Roland SH-2000 Modification

The pictures Fredrik took as i did a complimentry fix to the preset rocker switches (a few had lost their retaining rods).

The Roland SH-2000 is a preset synthesizer with aftertouch from 1973 which isn’t exactly a beast, but with a modification performed it can certainly widen its sound palette to be useful, not in only vintage kids programs and “switched on-stuff”, but to more funky and modern stuff. The mod basically enables you to mix all presets as you wish, instead of just selecting one at a time. We did this mod to Swedish house artist’s Q-Force’s SH-2000, and he immediately made this track

Q-FORCE – Only a Roland SH-2000 & a loop

“Thanks for wonderfully great mod of my SH-2000. Not a sound in the clip would be possible without the mod.”

Check out Q-Force on Myspace or his web page

Oberhiem OBX repair

The next machine is an Oberheim OBX, this one needed tuning and has some issues with saving patches.  After doing the tuning it became aparent that the autotune circuit was misbehaving. I’m currently waiting on some parts to complete the repairs.

Moog Minimoog tuning

Another relatively simple job, tuning a minimoog. First you have to tune the reference oscillator, then tune the main oscillators. I did find a discrepancy in the procedure of the manual, but that didn’t stop me from tuning this in. Man this machine sounds as lush as they get, really a nice sound, but i guess i don’t need to tell you that.

Yamaha CS-60 Calibration

Remember ABBA? how could you forget? Well this machine remembers them very well, since we have it on authority that this actual machine used to belong to Benny Andersson of ABBA. It didn’t have any serious issues apart from being completely out of tune. So it was my task to calibrate it back to factory settings. Quite a task since this is one of those machines that wasn’t designed from a service point of view. Still after considerable work it sings again like it should. Now wheres my platform shoes ;-D

Oberheim 4-Voice repair

Another Oberheim 4-Voice landed on my workbench. This one had many little problems such as the progrmamer LFO (vibrato) not working. Some of the Envelopes not working correctly and one SEM not functioning as it should. After the usual debugging and parts ordering this fine machine was repaired and calibrated back to it’s original glory.
