Oxford Synthesiser Company OSCar battery replacement.

[gallery link="file"] As some of you may know, the OSCar synths are prone to battery leakage. So it was time to take the OSCar out of the studio and give it a little preventative care. After opening it up, removing the battery and disassembling it, it was clear that it was in the early stages of leakage. Good job I took a look at it really. Finding an exact replacement is impossible, so I opted for finding a replacement with an equivalent rating. Then it was just a matter of fitting and putting the OSCar back together. Reassembly was quite a task. While it’s a desirable bit of kit, the build quality is less than desirable. It seems the designers didn’t take servicing into account when coming up with the case design. Oh well, with a lot of patience I managed to put it back together and give it a quick test.

Yamaha CS01, Roland JD800 and Oberheim 4-Voice

[gallery link="file"] A few more machines on the workbench. First up was a Roland JD-800 with a broken pitch-bend unit. Quite a simple fix and easy to source the part. A clients Yamaha CS-01 with a missing key, hopefully the spare part will arrive soon and I’ll get that up and running again. And then an Oberheim 4-Voice which had been partially repaired by someone else. There were still some problems with one of the SEMS which I’ve managed to rectify. In fact everything about the 4-voice Sems is now taken care of, but there’s a problem with the programmer unit which I’ll be taking a deeper look at soon. Also it seems like the Oberheim is possessed, see the attached picture.

Roland SRE-555 maintenance

[gallery link="file"] A Roland SRE-555 (Chorus Echo) arrived at the workshop. It powered on, but only the chorus was working. Upon further inspection I found the tape was mangled, the echo intensity set wrong and the reverb tank was completely trashed. The reverb tank had some interesting text written on the side as you can see in the picture, “manufactured by beautiful girls in milton, wis, under controlled atmosphere conditions” that gave us a chuckle. Anyway those tanks are no longer available but we’ve managed to find a suitable replacement.

Roland SH-101 Repairs

[gallery] A customer brought in a rather sick Roland SH-101. Apparently it had been dropped by a roadie. It had suffered a broken pitch-bender and several of the rotary potentiometers had been destroyed. It also had a strange issue with “weirdness” (as described by the client) . I was able to source the potentiometers but not the pitch-bend unit, so I had to come up with a temporary solution. The fix involved guitar strings, the long story short is that the string acted as a way of fastening the unit back together. It actually works very well, I’m not sure how long it will hold up under duress, but hopefully long enough until I can source a replacement unit. Seems like they are almost impossible to get these days.
